Over the past few months, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to meet with potential students, current students or returning students. People are seeking additional training for a variety of reasons, such as:
a high school graduate who needs guidance on what direction they want to go or if they want to continue with coursework at all
a stay at home parent or caregiver who wants to return to the workforce
a retiree who returns to work and would like to share their wealth of knowledge with updated skills
⏰ Mid-Career Wake-Up Call
And many I’ve met with, much like myself, experience what I coined as a “mid-career wake-up call” and pursue a completely different career path.
Whatever your reason (no judgement zone, by the way) for considering or pursuing a class, certification, or degree, I, along with an amazing NMC team and academic partners, are here to help you every step of the way.
🧠 Returning to School is a Mindset
I’d like you to consider returning to school with a mindset of training for a running race or marathon for example. A first time marathoner does not start training by running 15 miles, or even 5 miles. And speaking from personal experience, training may start with running only 500 feet, and then walking.
Just keep putting in the miles, walking or running and the distance will come.
But I had a friend who kept telling me, “Just keep putting in the miles, walking or running and the distance will come.”
And he was right.
I did eventually complete a full marathon, but it took A LOT of physical and mental training, the support of those around me, determination, asking questions, and learning from other runners but most importantly, I stayed focused on crossing over the finish line.
👟The Hardest Step is the First One
Returning to school is much like training to walk, run, bike or wheelchair a race. Maybe the first class you take is QuickBooks online – this is a one mile fun run.
Or maybe you decide to pursue a certification program in healthcare and sign up for a Medical Assistant Certificate – this is like a 5k (3.1 miles); or maybe you have always wanted an associate or bachelors degree – this is your marathon (26.2 miles).
But it all starts with one class at a time.
One step at a time, one foot in front of the other and those classes, like the miles, start to stack up, and along the way you are getting stronger, gaining more knowledge, becoming more marketable, more confident and gaining skills or making a career change you once imagined.
